Have you ever done it? If so, what method did you use? Is it worthwhile to recapture gold from gold-plated jewelry or do you only end up with a few pennies worth? Say I was to recover 10K plated gold from a charm (chain) bracelet (no charms). Would I recover more or less then $1?

The odds are you will spend much more to recover the tiny amount of gold on that necklace than the value of what you recover.

The plating on gold plated items is very thin and the chemicals used to recover it are very expensive. In order to turn a profit one must run large quantities of recovery materials. The process is very dangerous, even life threatening, so I do not reccommend you attempt this type of gold recovery. I've done it only to be disappointed with my results.

My husband works all day in different gas stations. He is always working around dirt, oil, and gas. Its his birthday soon and I want to get him either a ring or a bracelete and necklace set. I just dont know what is the best metal to choose for his jewelry. I want something thats not going to rust, chip, or break. Anyone know of what kind of metal would fit the discription?

When silver cheap type jewelry gets tarnished and chipped or brown looking and ugly I wonder if there is a way to dip it in something to make it look new again. I remember seeing something like that a while ago but I don't remember what it is. Obviously real silver can just be polished but it doesn't work with this other stuff.

why dont you get creative and spray paint the pieces diffenrent colors and wear them on like a satin string for a necklace....or just paint them different colors and put them back on a silver chain...for earings you may not want to paint the actual ear post though that may infect your ear!!

Will a jewelry store take pure silver nuggets. Used to work in a factory and made chips with silver in them and got a box of pure silver nuggets from them when moved to different state.

Try any that say they will buy gold. Current market price is $17 per ounce although a store might pay only half that amount. If you have a lot, you could send it to a refiner like Hoover & Strong and get a better price. www.hooverandstrong.com

I was just reading that in a different section. And am curious because I have worked in several kitchens in the past where all the engaged/married women wore wedding rings. And I have never heard of them being a safety risk. Even at the food handler's safety classes that the health dept has, they don't mention that being a risk of any kind, which they would be required to do so if it was.

The only time I have ever heard of anything related being a safety issue where food is concerned is when I worked at a summer camp one year. There was one boy who felt prejudiced because he was not allowed to wear nail polish while the girls in the kitchen were. He was told the reason he wasn't allowed to was because it might chip off into the food, even though there would have been the same risk from the girls but none were given any warnings about it, and plastic gloves were worn at all times.
By safety issue, I meant that you could injure yourself on the job by wearing it. For example, a person using heavy machinery could get it caught and lose their finger or their entire arm. My question is what in the food industry is the equivalent of that? Since I noticed many people in another post saying that food service was equally dangerous if you wear a ring on the job, but never mentioned why.

I used to work at KFC when I was a teenager and if only I could find the handbook because I remember reading in there that we're not supposed to wear jewelry. Of course, it's one of those dumb rules that no one really follows. Kinda like those dumb laws that were made a long time ago. I think part of the reason why is because jewelry can spread germs and when you're preparing food, it could be possible to spread germs from your rings to the food, but that's a long shot. And I guess there's also the possibility that your jewelry could accidently come off into the food but that's a longshot too. It's just one of those dumb rules.

And since you mention wearing gloves....I've noticed that in places like McDonalds and Burger King, the people aren't wearing gloves when they're in the kitchen putting together burgers. It really bothers me too.
