been looking for gold in streams and creeks and rivers and near bedrock areas cannot seem to find anything. thanks.

Glacial movement deposited gold in Ohio, there are no lode deposits here. As a general rule, you should seek streams and rivers flowing out of large gravel deposits where the water movement will concentrate the very fine particles of gold. Seek out some maps of past glacial movement, glacial end moraines are a good place to look for gold. At best a prospector in Ohio must move large amounts of overburden to find just a few flakes. Membership to the GPAA is very reasonable and will give you free access to claims across the country and lots of help from seasoned diggers. Outside of our claims I have found small amounts of gold in the Olentangy river below Delaware and in Rush creek in Rushville. Always keep an eye out for large garnets when prospecting in Ohio. I would really like to take my boyfriend on a real treasure hunt. He loves geology, any ideas?

Hvae been to Murfreesboro many times...the place is called Crater of Diamonds state park and diamonds are found there all the time...@ a rate of more than 1 a day...last time I took the kids there, talked to an older couple that have been there 6 times and have found 14 diamonds...it's not much more than a large field with wash and sifting stations but the thought of finding a diamond is very intruiging..taking the kids down there again when it cools down. I was on a field trip in Piedmont in Italy some twenty years ago looking for the many good garnet and diopside specimens that occur there. The area is famous for demantoid garnet crystals which are often up to 5 or 6mm in size. Whilst digging around I came across a nearly spherical ball of what seemed to be an aggregate of demantiod crystals about 65mm in diameter covered with a layer of asbestos like material. I put it in by bag without thinking too much about until I got back home to England. A long time later I thought that it might have an interesting internal structure so I took a slice off with a diamond saw and nearly fell over when I saw the result. The small outer crystals had formed over core of one huge single gem quality crystal. I had this cut professionally as I did not trust myself to do it justice. The result was two magnificent stones of 23.2cts and 11.08cts. which still are the prized specimens in my collection as anything over 2 or 3cts. is regarded as big for demantoid garnet.

because it has all already been harvested, Or mostly, anyway. I guess, its like that bumper sticker says: EARTH FIRST- we'll mine the other planets later.
well, I know its still here, but I mean in a natural state, Like big nuggets, and raw crystals of assorted gems. I know it hasn't all been mined, yet, But Already mining companies have started processing microscopic gold, because all the known veins are gone. I find it sad, you dont have to, tho.

I think it's even more sad that people in the future won't have any of the resources we have now.

How can you see that a mountain has gemstones hidden in it, or how can you find a place where they have lots of gemstones, gold for example?

Well for starters, Gold isn't a gemstone.

Knowing the mineralogy of any particular environment requires looking at landforms, rock types, structures... well a whole multitude of things.

Lets say for example you want to find obsidian. Obsidian is a volcanic glass, so if you think about it logically, you're not going to have much luck looking for it in the Utah salt flats for instance.

Geologists use a number of tools to help them locate valuable resources. Knowing the landform and environment is the first step to finding things, and then when you want to look for things deeper in the earth you use geophysics, then you drill a hole to find out exactly what's there.

At any rate, what I'm getting at is that you have to have an understanding of the land-forming processes to understand what rocks are in a particular environment, and therefore what minerals (which is what makes up gemstones).

If you want to learn more about it, I suggest you get a beginners geology book if you're really interested, or start off by looking at the earth sciences section of wikipedia.

The first thing you need to know is that there are 3 rock types, Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic, it all stems from there ;-)
