Ok, please please please, if someone knows how to do this, help me!

I bought a necklace with a rectangular painted wooden pendant online, but they shipped them to me when they weren't quite dry. i'm going to make the necklace myself now, mainly, the pendant (because when I wore the necklace, the paint or coating got all smudgy and lint got stuck to it from my shirt!). The pendant consists of:

A rectangle of wood
Black paint that goes over the wood
White paint on-top of the black for a design
A very shiny, smooth finish for all over

It would be easy to make in vitreous enamel. A copper shape with black enamel and white accent. Very permanent.

Looks like you need to cut the wood to size and sand smooth with very fine sand paper. Then, use a 0000 steel wool and rub it even smoother. Paint the top with black enamel paint and let it dry. Use white enamel paint for the lettering. It shouldn't need a top coat, but if it does, use a clear varnish or urethane finish.

I love doing crafts, and want to get back heavily into doing projects. I just love the calmness that it brings to my life. However, I will be the first to admit that I'm far from professional-looking. Some people might be ok with them as presents, but I don't think I could get away with it to everyone. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do with them after I'm done? I like doing ceramics, painting pottery (which I thought of painting and putting an herb in it as a present), painting wood things (like jewelry boxes that you get at Michaels, etc), suncatchers, bead work... I'm just afraid my husband is going to say "And what are you going to do with that when you are done?!" ...and I won't have an answer for him! Help!
I can do a good job on crafts, but I'm not too sure it is re-purchase-from-someone-with-taste worthy. ;-)
I love all these answers!! I'm going to leave this up for a few more days and then put it to a vote...I can't decide which answer I like more!!

Donate them to nursing homes and hospitals and retirement centers - You get a ton of practice and at the same time brighten the lives of many people who may otherwise be forgotten - they treasure a handmade gift because they know your time went into creating it -

Maybe you will get friendly enough that you can organize craft days with some of the retirement residents - Your projects become even more theraputic and you are filling your hands with good deeds......you can never have too many of those

I bought some that were on clearance and it says I can use paint, but what kind? I want paint that it'll make it gloss and shiny like the bangles at the store in the jewelry section. This may be silly, but would acrylic paints work?

Acrylic paint would work, but for a hard, shiny gloss, I would use enamel paint.

So here's the situation. I kinda missed my sweet sixteen (a.k.a. I didn't have one) so I want to make up for it this birthday party. It is winter so that rules out the pool party ideas. I usually do a craft sort of thing at each of my parties so here's a list of things I've already done in the past:
Decorated shirts
Homemade pizza (dough and everything)
Made Jewelry
Wood painted initials

The ages are 15-17 yrs.
All help is appriciated!!

try to find out if there is a habitat for humanity during that week. take all of your friends & volenteer for the day, then for the rest of your life you can drive past that house & say I helped to buiold that house for my 17th birthday.
